Essential Oils for Yoga

In this blog I share with you a little about each oil in doTERRA’s Yoga Collection, my favourite use for them and an idea for how you can use each oil at home.

doTERRA’s Yoga Collection is comprised of three unique oil blends created in partnership by Elena Brower and doTERRA. I have been in love with these oils since I got my hands on them and I probably use at least one of them everyday.

Some of doTERRA’s Essential Oil blends have different names in different regions. Below I list the US name on the first and the Australian name second to help sort out any confusion with the dual names.

  • Anchor - Anchor

  • Align - Affirm

  • Arise - Ascend

First up a little on Dilution of Essential Oils

doTERRA’s Essential Oils are super potent and powerful and actually work better if they are diluted with a carrier oil. This doesn’t weaken the oils at all, in fact it improves their absorption into the body and slows evaporation of the essential oil from our skin. Think of it as being a little like adding water to cordial as opposed to having cordial straight from the bottle!

With doTERRA’s Yoga Collection, as they already have some Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO) mixed through I suggest 10 drops of essential oil for every 5ml of carrier oil.

FCO is my go to ‘carrier oil’, as FCO has no scent, isn’t greasy and won’t go hard in the cold weather. It is also the perfect size molecule to carry the good stuff from the essential oil through the skin.

Anchor Essential Oil ~ The Oil of Steadying

Anchor is a blend of Lavender, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Cinnamon, Sandalwood, Black Pepper and Patchouli.

Anchor encourages you to feel clear and courageous at times of upheaval and uncertainty. The steadying affects of oils such as Lavender and Sandalwood in this blend make it a perfect Oil to accompany the start of your Yoga or Meditation practise. Within moments, when combined with your breath these oils can bring you calm and presence.

My favourite use for Anchor is for meditation. I often combine a couple of drops of Anchor with a drop of Arborvitae and dap them onto the soles of my feet and chest prior to settling in the meditate.

I invite you right now to take a moment with your Anchor Oil, following these three simple steps:

  1. Rub some Anchor onto your chest and base of your spine.

  2. Take a seat, close down your eyes, allow your palms to face down in your lap, a perfect position to allow for more grounding.

  3. Take 10 deep belly breaths.*

*Extend this sequence out for longer than 10 breaths if you have time. Pop on a track from my personal meditation playlist or go even deeper with Meditones

Align or Affirm Essential Oil ~ The Oil of Alignment

Align is a blend of Bergamot, Coriander, Marjoram, Peppermint, Geranium, Basil, Rose, and Jasmine.

With its three primary oils being Bergamot the oil of self-acceptance, Coriander the oil of integrity and Marjoram the oil of connection, is there any wonder it will help guide us into alignment?

My favourite use for Align is prior to a flow practise. Whether is be a vigorous Vinyasa Flow filled with arm balances or a steady Slow Flow, Align works with my flow to centre scattered energy. When I want to use Align this way I rub a drop into my chest, I often pair it with some Peppermint Touch on my temples.

I invite you to use Align now to centre and focus your energy. Just follow these three steps:

  1. Apply Align to your chest.

  2. For a minute of Flow practise 3 half or full Sun Salutations. Sign up for my free Yoga Library here for access to a guided Vinyasa practise.

  3. Once completed spend 10 breathes with your hands on your belly in stillness, seated, standing or in Savasana.

Arise or Ascend Essential Oil ~ The Oil of Enlightening

Arise is a blend of Lemon, Grapefruit, Siberian Fir, Osmanthus and Melissa.

This incredibly uplifting fruity blend provides you with an invitation to rise up to meet your life, connecting you with your intuition, through acceptance of your body, mind and spirit.

My favourite way to use Arise is at the end of my Yoga practise when I am ready to transition into the rest of my day. I apply it to the crown of my head and my chest. Taking some big deep breaths as I do.

I invite you to reach for your Arise at some stage in a transition within your day, whether it be after your Yoga practise, as you get out of bed or when you arrive at work. Simply follow these three steps to add a little enlightening into your day:

  1.  Apply Arise to the back of your neck and crown of your head.

  2. Pause for 10 deep belly breaths.

  3. Head into the next phase of your day with the optimism and connection of your mind, body and spirit.
