Make Your Own Massage Oil
Make your own delicious smelling massage oil.
Two frequent questions I am asked when it comes to doTERRA are:
What is a carrier oil?
And, what make good massage oil?
This Insights article will take you through the answers to these two questions along with some body loving DIY recipes!
Using Essential Oils Topically for Massage
When we talk about using Essential Oils for massage we, are talking about using them topically.
There are two kinds of oil we can use topically for massage. A base or carrier oil and Essential Oil.
The base or carrier oil is exactly how it sounds, it is a plain oil that acts as a base or carrier for the Essential Oil.
I recommend the following base or carrier oils:
Coconut Oil - form the jar (in Winter when it goes hard you will want to warm before use) or doTERRA's Fractionated Coconut Oil (already liquid, non-greasy and low scent)
Almond Oil
Jojoba Oil
Apricot Kernel Oil
Grapeseed Oil
doTERRA's Plain Lotion - not an oil but still great!
You might like to try out a few and see which one works for your skin. If you are making a body oil to use daily you might need a different oil to one you might use occasionally for a massage oil base.
doTERRA has some great Essential Oils already blended for an amazing massage! They are:
AromaTouch - I take this one to my monthly massage.
Ice or Deep Blue - This comes in 5ml, 10ml Roll On (undiluted), 10ml Touch and the Rub. The 5ml and Rub are easiest to use for a massage and with the Rub you won't need to dilute any further. With Ice Blue, avoid broken and dry skin, it can sting.
You could also make your own massage blend! I have some regular recipes I use and I keep a little dish with my Essential Oils ready to mix up my own recipe whenever I want to.
A note for children:
These are all adult dilution ratios.
Please dilute further, I suggest halving the drops for use with children.
Hot oils such as Ice/Deep Blue, Wintergreen and Lemongrass I would advise not to use on children under the age of 5.
My Favourite DIY Massage Oil Recipes
For Deep Relaxation
I love this recipe because it is simple, smells amazing and is suitable for most skin types. Which makes it great to give as a gift!
You can either make this one as a once off in a dish, neat in a re-used 15ml Essential Oil Bottle, to then be diluted in a carrier oil for each use, or make ready to use in a 30ml Amber Dropper Bottle.
Once off:
2 drops Lavender
2 drops AromaTouch
2 drops Frankincense
2 Tbs Fractionated Coconut Oil
Neat Recipe:
Empty & Clean 15ml Essential Oil Bottle
5ml Lavender
5ml AromaTouch
5ml Frankincense
Ready to Use Recipe:
Empty 30ml Amber Bottle
20 drops Lavender
20 drops AromaTouch
20 drops Frankincense
Approx 20ml Fractionated Coconut Oil
While each of the recipes below I give for single or once off use, you can follow that ratio to recreate in 15ml neat or 30ml ready to use bottles.
For Tight & Sore Muscles & Joints:
1 drop Lemongrass - tendon support
2 drops Frankincense
2 drops Ice Blue
2 drops Copiaba
2 Tbs Fractionated Coconut Oil
For an Area with Bruising that Needs Some Soothing:
1 drop Lavender
1 drop Cypress
1 drop Frankincense
1 Tsp Fractionated Coconut Oil
For Days 1-3 of My Cycle:
1 drop Wintergreen - helps with pain
1 drops Cardamom - warming
2 drops Cypress - blood flow & circulation
1 Tsp Fractionated Coconut Oil
I will also use this one in my diffuser if I haven't put it on my belly, it is a lovely wind down blend.
